How present day's movies tests Indian fundamentalism? PK movies as a case study.
The recently released Hindi movie (pk) staring Amir khan has made the Hindu outfits to protest against the film. The reason for protests is that it depicts the Hindu priests as villains .Actually the movie is not against any religion. It unmasked all mediators between god and people. The film criticised not only Hindu priests but also all mediators in all established religions.
Amir khan is an alien, came from another earth-like planet. The spaceship drops him stealthily somewhere in Rajasthan. Unlike other alien movies in Hollywood, they are not in very different shape. They are like humans only except broader ears projecting outside. In their planet they don't lie. They don't wear dresses. They can read minds. By holding hands they can transfer our memories to their brain. Amir khan has a remote to go back to their spaceship. It's like a fancy stone. He lose it to a man who sells it to a godman in delhi. The godman claimed that it is part of ornaments of lord shiva.
Amir khan starts to search his remote. For that he acquires the knowledge of our culture and language by transferring a girl's memory by holding her hand. Sanjay dutt helps him to acquire that without knowing about him. Those scenes are very humorous.
Then dutt advises him to go to Delhi where thieves would sell the lootings.
He goes to Delhi and asks everyone he meet about the remote. Everybody tells " god only knows". So he starts to search god without knowing the concept of god. Actually everybody on earth are socialised along with the idea of god .But the search of god by an alien is shown as very rational. the questions by him are very hilarious. All established religious faiths are equally shown in the film,(may be to avoid controversy). He can neither find remote nor god. He thinks the Gods are missing as he didn't help help him to find his remote. So he is issuing the pamphlets saying "god is missing".
In his effort to find god, He meets Anuska shetty, a reporter. She loved a Pakistani boy when she studied in sweden.they intended to marry.their parents opposed. Because of some confusion, marriage didn't happen. She returned to India heartbroken. She has been working as a reporter in a news channel. Anuska and khan become friends. He tell her that he is an alien and his story on earth. Anuska promises him to help to find his remote.
They find that the remote is with godman and they are shocked by godman's bogus claims.
She secures a job for Amir in her TV channel. They question the preachings of godman to unmask his true face.
The climax tells about whether he gets the remote and What happened to anuska's love story.
The directer wisely involved all religions to avoid controversy. Terrorism in the name of protecting god is questioned in the film.he also criticized the blame game of hindu muslims. The film emphasized the true faith with god and love. Totally this film tells the right things in current socio - political situations.
